What Is Programmatic Advertising? A Plain English Guide for Growing Businesses

By Stefan Amsellem

What is programmatic advertising? In plain terms, it is buying ad space through software, in real time, instead of negotiating each placement by hand. It is how a large share of display, video, streaming, and audio advertising is bought today, and it is no longer limited to national brands. This guide explains how programmatic works, what you can reach with it, which channels you can run on, and what to look for in a partner.

How Programmatic Advertising Works

Advertisers use a platform called a DSP, or demand-side platform, to set up campaigns, choose audiences, set budgets, and place bids. On the other side, publishers such as websites, apps, streaming services, and audio platforms offer their ad space through exchanges and supply-side platforms.

When someone opens a page or starts a show, an auction runs in a fraction of a second and the winning ad is shown. Some inventory is also bought through direct deals instead of open auction. Those deals give you more control over where your ads run and what you pay.

What You Can Reach With Programmatic

Programmatic gives you access to a much wider range of inventory than search alone, and several ways to decide who sees your ads.

  • Audiences. Reach people by interests, behaviors, demographics, and location.
  • Context. Show ads next to content that fits your business.
  • Your own visitors. Bring back people who visited your website but did not become leads.
  • Your customer lists. Reach existing customers or build audiences that look like them.
  • Premium inventory. Run on well known publisher sites, apps, and streaming services, not just the open web.

You also get controls such as frequency limits, so the same person does not see your ad too many times, and brand safety settings that keep your ads away from content you do not want to appear next to.

Which Channels Can You Run Programmatic On?

  • Connected TV and streaming. Ads inside streaming apps on the TV screen.
  • Online video. Video ads on websites and in apps.
  • Display. Banner and image ads across websites and apps.
  • Native. Ads that match the look of the content around them.
  • Audio. Ads in streaming music and podcasts.
  • Digital out of home. Ads on digital billboards and screens in public places.

You can run one channel or combine several. The right mix depends on your goals, your audience, and your budget.

How Is Programmatic Different From Google Ads?

Google Ads search campaigns reach people who are already looking for what you sell. Programmatic reaches people earlier, before they search, and brings back people who have already visited your site. Google Ads also includes display and YouTube, so the line is blurry. The practical difference is that programmatic platforms give you access to inventory beyond Google's own network.

For most businesses, search comes first because it reaches people with active intent. Programmatic works best when search is already working or when you need to build awareness. We plan the two together through our Google Ads management and digital media buying services.

Why Relationships Affect What You Pay

Not all programmatic inventory costs the same, and the same placement can be priced differently depending on how it is bought. Open auction prices move with demand. Direct relationships with publishers can open the door to private deals, preferred access, and better pricing on quality inventory.

Stefan Amsellem, AdTorq's founder, has built strong publisher relationships over years of buying media for major national brands. Those relationships can help secure efficient pricing across a range of inventory and channels. Pricing still depends on the channel, the timing, and your budget, and we do not promise specific rates. In practice, it means a better starting point when we plan and negotiate your media.

What to Look for in a Programmatic Partner

  • A clear plan for which channels and audiences to start with
  • Conversion tracking set up and verified before launch
  • Direct access to the person running your campaigns
  • Clear reporting tied to your goals, not just impressions
  • Transparency about what goes to media and what goes to fees

Is Programmatic Right for Your Business?

Programmatic is a good fit when you want to build awareness, reach people before they search, bring back website visitors, or put video and streaming in front of the right audience. It is not always the first step. If search is not set up yet, start there. If you are not sure, a short conversation is the fastest way to find out. If you are planning a bigger media investment, our advanced media consulting can help you plan it.
